Understanding Microsoft Support Life Cycles

Whether your version is supported by Microsoft will depend on the version you are on and which Microsoft lifecycle model they sit on, something we can help you navigate!

Fixed Lifecycle Support

For traditional fixed Lifecycle Support, Microsoft gave 5 years mainstream application support and a further 5 years for extended support. For all NAV versions, mainstream support is no longer available but for NAV 2016, 2017 and 2018, you get extended support. Extended support gives you security patches and regulatory fixes only.

Modern Lifecycle support

From BC15 onwards, Microsoft introduced the modern lifecycle model. Microsoft now provides 6 months of mainstream support – new features and bug fixes, followed by 12 months of security and regulatory fixes.

What does it mean to no longer be supported by Microsoft?
  • No more security updates
  • No bug fixes or regulatory updates
We’ve always maintained that we will support any version of NAV and BC on a reasonable endeavour's basis, and that hasn’t changed. We do, however, encourage you to plan to upgrade eventually to Business Central, particularly as security concerns become more prevalent, being on a platform that is supported and security patched by the software author becomes more of a driving force to upgrade. 
 
It's important to understand where you are in the lifecycle, as it helps to inform your plan to get to Dynamics 365 Business Central Online. If your Dynamics NAV or BC on-prem is no longer supported, you may be exposing your system to security vulnerabilities. It is also a great opportunity to get your business and your ERP into the cloud, where you will receive Microsoft’s highest-tier security, continuous monitoring of performance, and adaptive adjustments to your server space to give you access to what you need.
